Washington County Fair

This week is the county fair here in Abingdon. We've actually never been before, but I'm hoping to check it out this year. Looks like they have lots of fun activities for kids: a petting zoo, lawn mower races, kids day circus, and of course carnival rides. There's a full schedule on their website.

MOPS Carnival Kick-off and Registration

It's a playdate for Moms!
MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers and we are a fun, inspiring and encouraging group of Moms that meet to eat and socialize without interruptions, do a craft with sharp scissors and recharge our batteries while our children are cared for in a loving environment around the corner and out of ear shot!

Meetings are held the 1st Wednesday of each month from 9:15am - 12:00pm. Enjoy breakfast while listening to informative speakers on topics that matter to you. Childacre and a snack are provided for children ages birth to five.

This year's carnival kick-off will feature games, crafts, free snacks, balloon animals, face painting, car seat checks by the state police, identification kits courtesy of Sheriff Newman's office & more!

Busy Mom's Guide

For those of you that know Christina Moore I'm sure you've already checked out her new website. If you don't know her and didn't get an email introducing you to the Busy Mom's Guide I'm going to fill you in. This is an awesome resource for Local Events and puts this little blog of mine to shame. Be sure to check out the Kids Eat Free section that lists local restaurants and which nights they offer free or really cheap kids meals.

Wings and Wheels

There is an airplane and auto show at Virigina Higlands Airport here in Abingdon next Saturday, July 26th from 10am -4pm. Jacob is crazy about airplanes so we are going to go check it out for sure. I'm not sure about how much it costs, but the proceeds benefit the Kiwanis Childrens programs so it's a good cause.

Our Favorite Summertime Treat

We love to go get snocones from SnoBiz in Bristol. They are open daily from 2pm-10pm. It's a little purple hut across from Sonic on the other side of the interstate from all the other stuff at Exit 7. If you've never tried SnoBiz, the flavors I recommend are Tiger's Blood (a combo of Strawberry and Pina Colada) or the Dreamscile is Jacob's favorite. Beware of the Blue Raspberry! Jacob tried that one once and his mouth and lips were blue for the rest of the day.

The week of June 9th the event is the Annual Kickoff with lots of creative activities and crafts.

Raspberry Bars

Elizabeth brought some delicious raspberry bars to playgroup last time. Here is the fantastic recipe!

Raspberry Bars
Prep: 15 minutes
Cook: 20 minutes

Ingredients:
3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 cup firmly packed, brown sugar (I used Splenda brownsugar)
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour (I used whole wheat flour)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups quick cooking oats, uncooked
1 (10 ounce) jar raspberry preserves

* Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixeruntil creamy
* Gradually add sugar, beating well.
* Combine flour and next 3 ingredients
* Add to butter mixture mixing well.
* Press half of crumb mixture into a greased 13X9 inch pan.
* Spread raspberry preserves over crumb mixture.
* Sprinkle remaining half of crumb mixture over preserves.
* Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
* Cool on wire rack
* Cut into bars.

Yield 32 delicious bars.

Honey Bunches of Oats

Because we love cereal, I am always on the lookout for coupons, etc. Anyway, you can go to the money saving mom website and find links to print out coupons for $2 off a box of Honey Bunches of Oats. We wanted a change from the chocolate clusters, so we got a different kind and the coupons still worked!

Kroger has them on sale right now for $1.99 (says the post, I haven't checked at our local Kroger though).

Happy cereal day to you!

By the way, if you love free samples or just coupons, you can go to here and sign up. It's great!

New Links

There are quite a few new links posted. Some of them I use for helping me come up with new menu ideas, and others help me save money as I go grocery shopping or to buy household items, while some are helpful in understanding my children. Most of all, I am learning how to be a better wife, mother, sister, daughter and child of God.

Hope some of these sites help you out too!

Now on Facebook!

Come check out and join the Abingdon Moms playgroup on Facebook! Come join us!

Next Meeting Place

Happy snowy day moms!

The last playgroup we had was a ton of fun, thank you Janet for hosting! We missed those of you who couldn't make it. Hopefully you can make the next one!

Is anyone up for hosting one of the next two playgroups? We are looking for a home for Monday, March 10th or 24th. The duties of the host are simple - just open your home to some fun loving toddlers, babies and their moms. Generally the hostess would provide the main part of the lunch, which could be anywhere from a casserole to a sandwich making tray to soup to a hearty salad. Whatever suits your fancy. Of course if this is a problem, let me know and we can change things up a bit, no biggie!

If anyone is open to hosting, please let me know! Also, if you would like to host, but the month of March is not good for you, let me know that too and I will catch up with you next month! As always, don't feel pressured to host - it's just nice to change things up to different homes.

Hope you all are staying warm and I will see you at the next playgroup, if not before! If you have any questions or even comments about playgroup or suggestions you would like to see implemented into playgroup, just let me know!
